Driver Education Permit Information

Private driver education in Iowa or Wisconsin is NOT allowed

NEW INFORMATION REGARDING OUT-OF-STATE DRIVER EDUCATION:

The State of Illinois will NOT accept driver education instruction from private driving schools outside of Illinois. Illinois students MUST take driver education in Illinois unless they attend a private out-of-state school such as Wahlert. The state is cracking down on this law. You will be wasting your money if you put your son or daughter in a private driving school in Iowa because Illinois will not accept it, and I cannot "sign off" on it to allow students to take it out of state.

Again, this is something that has just come to my attention, and there is nothing I can do to change it. I am not going to violate the rules. Apparently, many Illinois students (not just in our area) have been taking driver education in Iowa and Wisconsin, and then they are denied a license in Illinois. I am not allowed to give them a permit application unless they live in our school district and are taking driver education at our school. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but it is state law which is now being emphasized and enforced.

East Dubuque High School First Semester Driver Education Students 2013-2014:
How to Get Your Driving Permit

  1. Driver education students CANNOT get a permit until 30 days before the class begins.

  2. You must be 15 years old to get your permit.

  3. You must be registered for driver education class AT EAST DUBUQUE HIGH SCHOOL for 2013 - 2014.

  4. You must have enough credits to be at least a sophomore at the beginning of the school year. Students are not promoted to sophomore standing during the school year, so if you are academically a freshman at the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year, then you are a freshman for the entire school year.

  5. We do not allow freshmen into driver education class.

  6. Again, you CANNOT take private driver education in another state if you wish to get an Illinois license.

  7. Pick up a copy of Rules of the Road from the Driver Services Facility in Galena and study for the written exam. One of the chapters in the booklet explains what will be on the test.

  8. Students entering driver education NEXT year (2013-2014) first semester, will be able to pick up their instruction permit applications in the high office on or after Tuesday, July 23.  Applications will not be available before that date.

  9. Take the application to the Secretary of State Driver Services Facility in Galena (near Piggly Wiggly). You will take a written test, an eye exam, and you will need to pay $20. All first semester students should have their permits by the first day of school.

Second Semester Students 2013 - 2014
